Innerlight Psychotherapy came to me through a word-of-mouth referral with an important piece of its identity already established: the red lantern.
The client had used red lantern imagery since the beginning of her practice, and it had become something people associated with Innerlight. But the existing identity relied on stock imagery rather than a distinctive mark the practice could call its own.
The goal wasn't to replace that recognition. It was to preserve what the lantern meant to the client while transforming it into an original visual identity.

02 / THE CONCEPT
DISCOVERING THE
LIGHT WITHIN.
A STRONG IDEA.
NOT YET THE RIGHT IDENTITY.
The client connected with the meaning behind the concept, but the direction had moved too far away from something already important to Innerlight: the lantern itself.
Rather than abandoning the thinking behind the first concept, I returned to the lantern and began exploring how the person, heart and inner flame could exist within a single recognizable symbol.

03 / EXPLORATION
DRAW. REDUCE.REPEAT.
With the lantern established as the symbol that needed to remain, I returned to Adobe Fresco and began exploring how the ideas from the first direction could be brought together into a single mark.
Using a symmetry grid, I repeatedly sketched variations of the lantern silhouette while experimenting with the relationship between the human figure, heart and flame.
I wasn't looking for more elements to add. I was looking for the simplest form where all of the ideas could exist together naturally.
FINDING THE MARK.
Through repetition, the separate ideas began to collapse into one shape. The outer structure retained the recognizable lantern silhouette, while the negative space inside began forming the human figure.
The heart became the head of the figure, and the flame moved inside the body—turning the client's idea of an “inner light” into something visible within the mark itself.
04 / THE MARK
ONE SYMBOL.
FOUR IDEAS.
The final mark brings the strongest ideas from the exploration into a single symbol. Rather than placing separate icons inside a lantern, the elements were designed to share the same structure and negative space.
From a distance, the mark reads as the red lantern already associated with Innerlight. At a closer look, the lantern reveals a person, a heart and a flame—each connected to the client's philosophy of finding the light within
05 / VISUAL IDENTITY
WARMTH WITHOUT
LOSING CONFIDENCE.
With the final mark established, the next step was building a visual identity that reflected the same balance as the symbol itself.
The client wanted red to remain central to the brand because of its connection to the lanterns she had used throughout the history of the practice. Rather than using a bright, aggressive red, I moved toward a deeper tone that felt warmer and more grounded.
A contrasting orange was introduced for the flame, giving the “inner light” its own visual presence while remaining connected to the warmth of the overall palette.
